New Roderbruch shirts: cherry blossom branches for Hiroshima by Maike Jacobs

Robert Wiegmann, founder and designer at the Hanover label Roderbruch, had wanted to design a motif for the town twinning with Hiroshima for a long time. "I had the idea of addressing the history of this partnership and emphasizing the special connection between Hanover and Hiroshima."

Wiegmann put a lot of time and heart and soul into his designs, constantly changing them until he was finally satisfied. The result is - and that is something special for the label - two motifs on the subject. “I was very excited to work with the cherry blossom branch. In contrast, I designed a second print that isn't quite as playful,” says Wiegmann. The motifs always contain small messages that are not immediately recognizable. So Wiegmann wants people to deal with the topic, maybe even start reading it - or start a conversation about what the individual motifs stand for. "These two shirts are very close to my heart, I like Japan and Japanese culture," emphasizes the designer. The suffering that this city experienced during the war when the atomic bomb was detonated is still incomprehensible today - and in view of the war in Europe it is highly topical, as is the desire for peace, international understanding and friendship. Starting this week, T-shirts and hoodies can be ordered from Roderbruch, the label that has set itself the task of offering special motifs for Hanover. The pictures are printed by Wiegmann by hand using the screen printing process, so color requests can also be made. Shirts and hoodies are fair and organic, the colors are vegan, solvent-free and water-based. Wiegmann and his business partner Katrin Kiehne-Lemnitz hope that the new motifs will be well received by the people of Hanover - and that they may even be seen at the Cherry Blossom Festival, which this year on Sunday, April 24, from 2 to 5:30 p.m. under the cherry trees of the Hiroshima grove on the old bult (south city) is celebrated. More information about the festival can be found on the weekly overview on page 23 roderbruch.de
